The Crisis Prevention Institute is committed to helping organisations create and maintain safe and respectful environments through meaningful training, educational resources, and consulting services. Guided by its core philosophy of promoting Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM for all, the Crisis Prevention Institute strives to set the highest standards for training programmes and resources in behaviour management and violence prevention.

CPI was established in 1980 for service professionals to address the need for training in safe, respectful, non-invasive methods for managing disruptive and assaultive behaviour that are compatible with staff's duty to provide the best possible care.

CPI's Nonviolent Crisis InterventionSM training programme was developed during the 1970s. A co-founder’s human service experience in kinesics, physiology, and communication contributed to the development of an innovative, holistic system for defusing escalating behaviour. Understanding effective communication and human physiology during aggressive moments, along with the core philosophy of maintaining Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM, provided a balance in behaviour management that was unique at that time.

Since 1980, more than 5.4 million service professionals around the globe have participated in the Nonviolent Crisis InterventionSM training programme to learn its proven strategies for safely resolving situations when confronted by anxious, hostile, or violent behaviour, whilst still protecting the therapeutic relationships with those in their care.
